Pelvic health issues are a common problem in both men and women but are very rarely talked about. Often these individuals suffer without ever realizing there are practitioners that are evidence based trained to help specifically with these concerns.
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that span the pelvis like a hammock. They extend from your pubic bone in the front to the tailbone and sacrum in the back and continue around the sides to the sitz bones (the two bones you sit on).
The muscles of the pelvic floor play a key role in supporting the organs and help maintain urinary and fecal continence. In addition these muscles assist with stabilizing the pelvis, back and hips and aid the body in pumping blood and lymphatic fluid through the pelvis. Sexual function can also be affected by pelvic floor dysfunction.
Often issues with the pelvic floor can be caused by hypotonicity (weak pelvic floor muscles) or hypertonicity (tight pelvic floor muscles). In some cases it is a combination of both that can be impacting the pelvic floor.
Kegels are NOT always indicated for pelvic floor problems. Sometime they do more harm than good, and are often NOT performed correctly.
In order to determine what is causing your specific issue, a full body assessment is conducted as well as an internal exam. Internal exams are necessary as some of the pelvic floor muscles are too deep to assess from the outside of the body. Internal palpation becomes important in order to determine if the muscles are too tight or too weak and to establish how they are functioning.
